Areca Disk Expansion

Areca disk expansion from small to bigger disks

This manual will tell you how to migrate your Areca RAIDSET from small disks by exchange them one by one for
bigger disks. You can do it with hotswap the disks when you disk are located in a hotswapple unit (recommended and fastest) Also possible to coldswap (when PC/Server is off) but in that case you need to add disk in Areca manually
as a hotspare after every disk replacement.

Example situation

RAIDSET Name in this example RAID5 NEW (See RAIDSET Hierarchy)

RAIDset with 4 disks 500GB  in RAID5 setup (RAID Level doesn´t really matter, RAID1 or RAID6 is also possible),
We will expand the 4 disks of 500GB into 4 disks of 1TB

1. Before you start, check if you have a good backup..!!
2. Remove HOTSWAP 1 500GB drive when system is running.
Areca will start beeping !! No panic, thats OK.

3. Replace a new 1TB disk and rebuild will start automatic when new disk HOTSWAP is inserted.
4. WAIT till the rebuild is READY...!!!
5. Check if rebuild is ready and RAIDSET and VOLUME are in NORMAL STATE
6. repeat step 2,3,4 and 5 for every disk to exchange
7. When all disk are replaced and rebuild, you will still have a SMALL RAIDset,
because capacity is not yet expand.
8. Check and copy the name of the RAIDset Example  RAID5 NEW

9. login the browser management console, Raidset Functions > Rescue RaidSet

10. enter the keyword "RESETCAPACITY RAID5 NEW", confirm and submit,

after that, controller will reconfigure the raidset capacity.

11. Login to your OS, and expand your Partition with a partition tool, or create a new partition.

12. Thats it,
